ALC-Run PEI Online Casino to Launch in the first half of 2021
In December 2020, the Prince Edward Island cabinet approved a version of the Atlantic Lottery Corporation online casino for the province. Neighbouring Atlantic provinces of Newfoundland & Labrador and Nova Scotia are considering the same.
In August 2020, the ALC launched an online casino in New Brunswick with little fanfare.
Other provinces including Quebec, Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia, already offer online casino games within their respective provincial lottery corporations.
The PEI Minister for Finance is going ahead despite the absence of public consultation. She argued that two independent expert reviews were conducted by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, concluding that there would be no significant impact on gamblers. The new PEI online casino would be run by the ALC.
Although this move is not expected to recover all the lost revenue from current offshore players, it's expected to make a dent in the number. Also, Islanders who were uncomfortable betting at online casinos offshore may feel more comfortable visiting one based in the province.
About the Atlantic Lottery Corporation
The Atlantic Lottery Corporation is a jointly-owned corporation by the PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland & Labrador.
It is continuing to shift towards digital platforms as it adapts to competition from offshore sites. It's estimated that about C$100 million is lost annually to operators unlicensed to provide Atlantic Canadians with gambling products.
The real money casino games on offer include a limited number of slots from IGT and Nextgen. These include progressive jackpot slots like Cleopatra, Golden Goddess and Arctic Gems. There is also a limited selection of table games including baccarat online, blackjack, Ultimate Texas Hold'em, three card poker and roulette games. There is also currently only 1 video poker game available.
Offshore Online Casinos for Canadians
If the PEI government wants to catch up to offshore ones, a lot of work is left to be done. Although not licensed in the province, Islanders can find reputable European-licensed online casinos from the UK, Malta, Gibraltar or other.
There are unlicensed online casinos and casinos licensed in weak jurisdictions like Panama or Curaçao. Canadians should avoid unlicensed casinos altogether and proceed with caution on others not licensed in Europe.
Licensed online casinos offer thousands of slots, online casino games, live casino games and sometimes even sportsbook. Canadians can also play free online slot machine games, free roulette, poker games for free and more.
These casinos accept Canadian online casino payment methods such as credit cards, Interac, iDebit and Instadebit. This means that they welcome CAD deposits and withdrawals.
Canadians also qualify for an online casino bonus consisting of a match deposit, sometimes combined with free spins. Some online casinos also offer a live casino bonus and/or a sports betting bonus.
A few casinos offer new players a no deposit bonus consisting of free spins or bonus money. All they need to do is register a player account. All bonuses at online casinos have bonus terms that you should read first.
