ISK – Icelandic Króna (Crown) at Online Casinos in 2024

Iceland flag

Iceland is a Nordic country, discovered over 1,100 years ago by the Vikings. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, it is sparsely populated with a little over 364,000 people. Over 60% of the population live in Reykjavik, the northern-most capital city in the world.

Iceland's location made it one of the last countries on the planet to be settled by people. It's known as the land of fire and ice for good reason. The interior of Iceland consists of lava fields which can extend for hundreds of miles. At the same time, one can find mountains and glaciers that make for extreme contrasts. Iceland is known for its outdoor hot springs which are volcanically heated.

About the Icelandic króna

The Icelandic króna ↱ is also known as the Icelandic crown. It first appeared in 1874, replacing the Danish rigsdaler. This separation resulted from the dissolution of the Scandinavian Monetary Union at the commencement of World War I. For a time (1925-1939) the krona was pegged to the British pound and then the US dollar (1939–1949).

Today, the free-floating Icelandic króna is often quoted in terms of euros. In 2019, Iceland's nominal GDP was roughly $24 billion. The main contributors towards GDP are tourism, fisheries, and manufacturing of aluminium amongst others.

FAQ for Icelandic króna at casinos

Gambling in Iceland is tightly controlled, and offshore casinos are illegal. However, a national lottery and slot machines are legally operated by Íslandsspil, owned by charities.

64% of Íslandsspil is owned by The Red Cross, which uses the proceeds to fund their humanitarian work. 26.5% is owned by members of ICE-SAR. These are volunteers who operate equipment, offer accident prevention training, and search & rescue. The remaining 9.5% is owned by SÁÁ (National Centre of Addiction Medicine).

These operators must comply with the regulation on Collection Boxes (320/2008) and the Act on Electronic Gambling Machines (73/1994). There are tight controls on slot machine locations, ISK deposits (ISK 10-250), and maximum jackpot (ISK 20,000). The return to player (RTP) must be at least 89%, and Icelandic players must be 18 or over to play.

Although illegal, these restrictions have led some Icelandic players to visit offshore online casinos. We do not encourage breaking any Icelandic loss at Fortuna Online Casinos. We do look forward to the day when players in Iceland can legally visit offshore casinos online.

Outside of the country, the story is different, allowing players residing in other countries to find a few casinos that accept Icelandic króna.

Casinos that accept ISK currency that are licensed and regulated in Europe are generally safe. Ideally, you'll want a casino that holds one or more licences such as an MGA, UKGC or Spelinspektionen.

Casinos licensed by quality regulators are responsible for ensuring the fairness, safety and transparency of operators. The random number generator (RNG) and stated RTP of each game are tested and certified for fairness by independent third-parties.

Today's casinos use SSL encryption and payment gateways to protect sensitive information such as credit card details. We believe that all of our recommended operators are trustworthy online casinos that pay valid winnings.

Unfortunately, there are not many online casinos accepting ISK. However, we have found a few licensed and regulated casinos which do. Punters from outside of Iceland can register a new player account and specify Icelandic króna as the currency player account.

Remember, once choosing Icelandic crowns, it may not be possible to change it afterwards. Therefore, ensure you have an adequate supply of ISK if you intend on playing regularly.

We don't suggest exchanging another currency into ISK because it will incur foreign exchange fees that can get quite expensive.

Iceland casinos with ISK currency will allow króna deposits and króna withdrawals. Unfortunately, account currency options are relatively limited compared to some others like CAD casinos or EUR casinos.

To help, we've put together a list of some of the best ISK casinos online. Each will allow you to register a casino player account in Icelandic crown. You can top up your player account with ISK and cashout in the same currency.

For compliance purposes, a player must use the same method to deposit and withdraw. This is a standard industry practice. If not possible, the casino will typically choose a bank transfer method to process your withdrawal request.

Qualifying for an online casino bonus depends on your country of residence and the casino's policy towards your country. Most online mobile casinos offer a welcome match deposit bonus and possibly a free spins bonus to new players who make the first deposit.

Always check the bonus T&C to ensure that you qualify or ask a customer support representative. You'll also find additional information on playthrough requirements, min/max limits and other restrictions. Remember that bonuses are optional and require you to opt-in.

The availability of online casino payment options depends on your country of residence and the casino.

Icelandic króna credit card deposits using Visa and Mastercard may be available in your country. It may also be possible to use e-wallets at Icelandic króna Jeton casinos, Skrill casinos and ecoPayz casinos as these wallets allow you to select ISK for the account as well.

Electronic vouchers such as the ones used at Paysafecard casinos may also be available, or you may be interested in Neteller casinos, but this e-wallet may not allow for ISK payments.

The casino payment methods we mentioned are all safe, fast and secure and have both advantages and disadvantages that you'll want to consider.

If unsure about the payment options available, visit the online casino's banking section, the terms & conditions, or speak to a customer support representative.
